Building on the Right Foundation

Scripture: Matthew 7:24–25

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

Devotional Thought:
Every marriage is built on something. For some, it’s emotion. For others, it’s attraction, comfort, or convenience. But Jesus teaches that the only foundation that will last when life’s storms come is obedience to His Word.

As you move toward marriage, you’re not just planning a wedding you’re laying a foundation for a lifelong covenant. Every choice, conversation, and act of love right now is another brick in the house you’re building together.

Storms will come, financial pressure, unmet expectations, spiritual dry seasons, but when Christ is the foundation, the house stands. It doesn’t mean you won’t feel the wind. It means you won’t collapse when it blows.

So before anything else, before budgets, schedules, or even the ceremony, make sure your hearts are aligned around this simple truth: We will build our marriage on Jesus Christ and His Word.

Practical Steps to Start Building Now

  1. Pray Together Regularly – Even a short prayer before bed or before leaving for work can strengthen spiritual unity and build trust.

  2. Set a Rhythm in God’s Word – Read one chapter of Scripture together each week. Take turns picking it and talk briefly about what stands out.

  3. Practice Healthy Communication – When disagreements arise, focus on listening before responding. Aim to understand, not to win.

  4. Serve Together – Find one small way each month to serve someone else as a couple. It keeps your focus outward and your hearts humble.

  5. Seek Accountability – Stay connected with a godly couple or mentor who will encourage and pray for you as you prepare for marriage.
