Hello, friends! I'm Pastor Wesley Morgan, the Senior Pastor here at First Baptist Church of Clayton, and I'm so glad you're reading this. If you've been joining us for a few months, maybe a few years—maybe slipping into the back pew on Sundays, chatting with folks during our time of greeting, or involved in one of our small groups—first off, thank you! We've loved having you with us, and it's been a joy to see you becoming part of our community. If you're starting to feel like this is home and wondering, "What does it take to officially become a member?" you're in the right place. Let's chat about it like we're sitting down for coffee together. Membership isn't about jumping through hoops—it's about committing to grow in faith alongside a family who loves Jesus and each other.
Why Membership Matters at FBC Clayton
At our church, membership is more than just a name on a list. It's a heartfelt promise to walk together as followers of Christ, supporting one another through life's ups and downs. Think of it as saying, "I'm in this with you—for worship, service, and sharing God's love in Clayton." We've drawn this from Scripture, like Hebrews 10:24–25 (NASB): "Let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near." It's about building each other up!
If you've been attending and sensing God's nudge to dive deeper, membership is that next step. It's open to anyone who's ready to affirm our shared beliefs and commit to our church family.
What It Takes to Become a Member
Our process is straightforward and designed to help you feel connected and confident. Based on our church's guiding documents—like our Constitution and Church Manual—we want to make sure you're aligned with who we are as a Bible-believing, Christ-centered community. Here's what it looks like:
A Personal Faith in Jesus: First things first—have you trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord? We believe salvation comes by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9), and membership starts with that genuine relationship. If you're new to faith or have questions, I'd love to talk with you personally!
Believer's Baptism: If you've professed faith in Christ, we ask that you've been baptized by immersion as an outward sign of your inward commitment. This follows the biblical pattern (Acts 2:38). If you were baptized elsewhere in a church with similar beliefs, that's great! If not, we can walk you through it here—it's a beautiful celebration.
Affirming Our Beliefs and Covenant: You'll review and agree with our Statement of Faith, which covers essentials like the authority of the Bible, the Trinity, and salvation through Jesus alone. You'll also embrace our Church Covenant—a simple promise to pursue holiness, unity, and service together. Don't worry; we'll cover all this in our membership class so it's clear and meaningful. You can read through those at firstclayton.com/beliefs.
Meet with Our Elders or Talk with Our Pastor: You'll chat with me or one of our elders. It's not an interrogation—it's a friendly conversation to hear your story, answer questions, and ensure we're all on the same page. We use this time to celebrate how God is working in your life.
Church Affirmation: Finally, we'll present you in front of our church where the congregation joyfully affirms new members with a time of greeting at the end of the service. It's a sweet moment of welcome, often followed by a celebration in service.
What to Expect as a Member
Once you're a member, you're part of the family! We ask everyone to live out our covenant in practical ways, but it's all about grace and growth:
Gather Regularly: Come to Sunday worship and engage in studies or events—aim for at least monthly attendance unless life throws a curveball (we get it; just let us know so we can pray for you!).
Give Cheerfully: Support our ministries through offerings, as you're able—it's how we fuel outreach and care for our community.
Serve with Joy: Jump in where God has gifted you, whether that's greeting newcomers, helping with kids, or joining outreach.
Stay Connected and Accountable: We're committed to loving one another, which includes gentle accountability if needed. If you're away for a while (like 6 months without contact), we'll reach out to check in and help you reconnect.
Membership isn't perfect—none of us are!—but it's a beautiful way to grow together in Christ.
